Whether you are involved in grapegrowing or the making, marketing and selling of wine you are often required to have a set of skills over and above your area of expertise. For international visitors to your winery, you may be expected to give a vineyard and winery tour, teaching beginners the basics of tasting and describing wine and recommending food and wine combinations. This publication will help you to do this in English. As you progress in your career, and especially if you are the English language specialist of your company, you may be asked to write tasting notes and vintage reports for the company's website and represent the firm at international trade fairs - where you are actively promoting your brand and negotiating sales deals with international wine buyers. You may have the privilege of being asked to sit on an international judging panel of a wine competition, or even to attend and give presentations at international wine conferences and symposia. All of this will demand of you a high level of very specialized English centred on the language of wine in all its aspects. As a chef/owner, sommelier or food and beverage man-ager, you will need to accommodate the wine needs of your international customers to your restaurant or hotel. At the back end of the business, you may be required to have direct contact with international wine producers and distributors.Of course, as a student in one of the many areas of the wine industry, all of this awaits you. In today's job mar-ket, having the ability to communicate effectively in English to those inside and outside the wine industry is something that is highly sought after by your future employers. Alternatively, it could be that vou are one of many wine lovers who never gets tired of learning about wine.
